There are many metaphors used in the tradition of Spiritual Direction.  Midwives of the soul, the third chair, a mirror with a mouth, etc.

In Spiritual Direction, we often use the metaphor of the third chair.  What is the third chair you ask?

In a typical spiritual direction session, spiritual seekers meet a spiritual companion one-on-one.  In a two person meeting - we leave metaphorical chair-space for the Divine, the unknown, unexpected.
